Teachings of BGK

Buddhism is the teachings of Sakyamuni Buddha, who was born in India more than 2,500 years ago. He tried to find the true cause of human suffering by spiritually training his mind for 13 years. He eventually reached the ultimate stage of enlightenment at the age of 32. For nearly 50 years until his death, he preached many teachings (sutras). Among these, the Lotus Sutra, which he preached during his final 8 years, is considered to be the most supreme. The chant Na Mu Myo Ho Ren Ge Kyo is the core of the Lotus Sutra, which means, “I absolutely believe in the Lotus Sutra,” in Sanskrit. The Lotus Sutra says that rather than depending on others for help, we should try to resolve our own problems by finding the true cause. Human beings experience various kinds of sufferings in their daily lives. There are certain sufferings that we are not able to find solutions for, even with the help of modern technology and advanced medical care. The Lotus Sutra revealed the truth that most sufferings are caused by our own greed and passions. Struggling to fulfill these desires results in causing pain to ourselves, as well as to those around us. If we can control these desires, we will be able to free ourselves from unnecessary pain and suffering. Good deeds bring good results and bad deeds cause pain and suffering. This is the basic law of life, which is called “KARMA” in Buddhism. Based on the spirit of self-help and the law of karma, the Lotus Sutra explains to us to repent for the wrong deeds that we have done and to try to correct them. At the same time, we should also do as much good as possible. Buddha and the gods will protect those who make such efforts. This is the basic teachings of Bussho-Gonenkai.
